The north of Sri Lanka, with an overwhelming Tamil population, has been the hub of  the Tamil rebellion before mid 2009, when the current government came to power and totally wiped out and brought peace to the areas in north and east. Development projects have been started in many sectors including Hotels, Education, health, transportation and more to bring up the civilian life in the area.

The north was the least-visited part of the country because of its relative remoteness and dry, flat landscape. For the visitor it meant basically just two areas: the Jaffna peninsula at the nothern tip and the island of Mannar, which was the arrival and departure point for the ferry to/from India.
